The Booker School is a Pre-Primary to Grade 8 independent school situated in Nova Scotia’s beautiful Annapolis Valley. Our learning is IB-inspired, inquiry-based, and concept-driven.

Now in its twelfth year of operation, the Booker School school was originally developed by a group of dedicated families looking to provide an alternative education model in the area. In 2012, the school began to establish its place within the community, connecting with organizations and individuals holding a similar ethos.  The school campus is situated in the beautiful village of Port Williams, in a Georgian-style building on nearly 5 acres of diverse land. Our slice of the Annapolis Valley offers a wonderful outdoor education for our students to complement what is happening within our walls.

The Booker School is inspired by, and working towards, becoming accredited by, the International Baccalaureate. Our school firmly believes in inquiry as the vehicle for learning through a concept-driven curriculum that embraces individual learners and real world issues. At The Booker School, we believe that this curriculum and style of learning can be embraced by all and offers a chance to the local community to democratize education. With this aim, our teachers and leadership are experienced and trained in the IBO program so that we can facilitate this as we progress towards accreditation.

We believe in providing opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop a love of learning, and acquire the skills to become successful members of society. We believe in developing an appreciation of the world around us and a desire for service and action in the local and global community. Our curriculum engages the resources around us, the businesses, the education systems and the natural world. Our learning extends beyond our school grounds for our students to build a sense of belonging in our wider community.  

The concept of 'community' at The Booker School is one that is important to us. As a small school with small class sizes, we are a family. The beautiful five acre campus the school resides on houses our learning in a home setting, with access to local environmental features such as the Acadian dykes system, forests, marshland, and our campus gardens. Our students interact with one another across the ages, with older peers often acting as role models and leaders for the younger ones. We have an experienced faculty of enthusiastic, caring teachers who are here to encourage a love of learning in our students.

Our aim is to become a part of the wider community - both here in the Annapolis Valley - and beyond. By interacting with local businesses, being involved in community events and connecting with others, our school aims to grow its community and embrace the area in which we live.
